I am planning on getting into triathlons. Any advice on getting a nice bike that doesn't cost more than $1000?

I have heard that a hybrid bike would be a good bike to start with , however, i was under the assumption that a road bike was the way to go. any comments?

Answer
Agree with the others. Don't consider a hybrid bike if you are seriously planning on getting into triathlons (and especially if you plan on doing more than just one triathlon). They're less aero and you might be able to post a decent time but it will require a lot more work on your part.

I have several suggestions for you to keep your budget down.
1) Check Craigslist for your region and check often. Sometimes you'll be able to get bikes that are practically new but you'll save a great deal more than if you were to simply go into your local bicycle store where they would at best give you an entry level bike and take your $1000+.
2) Check local bike stores for new but clearance items
3) Check ebay also but use site that mostly for pricing estimates on bikes you are considering
4) Check the websites roadbikereview and bikepedia as you start to learn about the different bikes and comparable bikes
5) Do not rule out road bikes just because you are thinking of triathlons. Triathlon/TT bikes are designed specifically for those but many triathletes also use road bikes instead since they are more practical outside of triathlon/TT races.
6) You can also consider "building" a bike. You can search for a frameset that fits you as well as a complete bike that might not necessarily be the correct fit for you but has all the correct components you need (for example, a bike with all Shimano Ultegra gruppo that is simply the wrong size frame for you) and pay a bike store to do a custom build. Might cost around $200 or so for that but if you have your nice frameset and the complete bike (wrong size) then you'll have a much better product for the long run and still save money.

Road bike or hybrid?!?

Hey guys,
I am having a difficult time deciding on which bike to get, I am a beginner. Thinking of maybe doing a "fun" triathlon one day.
The road bike makes more since due to speed. However, I do have back issues and think a hybrid would be more comfortable. Plus, I'm not used to the positioning/posture for a road bike. What are your thoughts/experiences?

Answer
I really think you will not be satisfied with a hybrid for triathlon purposes, even for fun. The difference in speed between a hybrid and road bike is very significant. You should look at the road bikes with a more relaxed position like the Trek Pilot and Giant OCR lines. Every major line has these more upright road bikes. The "bling" brands have them too, like the Cervelo RS. Let your local bike shop know what you need.
