Electric bike engine questions.?

Boss

ok so guys, recently iv thought hey, why not put an engine on a bike..
now my first problem was electric or fuel. iv chosen electric since it is quiet, no fuel, easier etc.
but.. i have no clue on what 'sort' of engine, whats big enough to push a bike along. i really dont need to go fast maybe 10km/h or 20km/h. Maybe even, just helpout my pedaling. i understand batteries, and connecting to the wheel. what engine do i need? hopefully under $50.

Answer
ha ha

none of those will work

why not google 'bike electric motor' and just buy a kit for $200?

though i don;t recommend adding motors or engines
the kits are crappy
but you will never do it on your own
or for $50

what are you smoking>?

Questions on Motorized/Electric Bikes?

Snejana

I was looking at for example this bike: http://www.spookytoothcycles.com/component/virtuemart/?page=shop.product_details&flypage=vmj_ace.tpl&product_id=305&category_id=82 The Low Step Trailz

I've never have an Electric/Motorized bike before so I'm unsure what to look for. I want a bike than can go atleast 20 miles in distance, but I also don't have much money to spend.

A few other questions I have:
Can you use these bikes for normal riding without the motor?
How often does maintenance need occur?
Any other information on motorized/electric bikes along with recommendations would be great.
Thank you so much!
Also- Can you ride them in the rain without using the motor or will that ruin the bike?
I didn't use the site, because the site is bias. I wanted answers from people who actually have experience with them and can also give some possible negative feedback...
thank you wle, that's what i was looking for

Answer
You can ride them in the rain they are low voltage, only 24 volts. You can get 20 miles of them if you pedal, you will never go that far if you don't. One of the biggest problems with battery assisted bikes is battery memory. If you don't run the battery down below a certain level they won't take a full charge and the range is reduced. That is why you want a second battery to switch too after the first one run down. You can remove the battery completely and use the bike normally but it will still be heavy.

For that distance I would take a look at a gas motor instead of the battery operated ones. A small gas engine kit is not very expensive and will give you more power without running down.
