me and my friend plan to take a bike trip from buffalo ny to NYC... google maps suggests a route that is 500 miles but i highly doubt they give bikers reliable information...or do they?
any info helps THANKS!!!!!! ill pick b/a asap.
Answer
Google maps has an option to pick routes for bicycling. Selecting that option will keep you off the busiest roads and will also take advantage of bike paths and other ways to minimize your exposure to dangerous traffic. Just click the bicycle image above the start and destination addresses.
I tried it for Buffalo to NYC. The suggested route puts you on the Canalway trail for a lot of the distance.

Why doesn't NYC get more bike friendly? Would you ride a bike if there was a bike lane?

I saw a guy making good time on a bicycle and it looked like fun but unless you have a safe place to park your bike it will take off with someone else. I take the subway and it is really filthy and very humid and warm.

Actually, they're working on it! They just blazed a bike path right down Broadway in Midtown in the last couple of weeks. There are often racks in some of those small parks near buildings. Furthermore, there are other things about this city that you might like to know:
You are allowed to take a bicycle onto the subway at ANY TIME. The MTA recommends against doing so during rush hour, but that's ultimately up to you.
For a $5 lifetime permit, you can take your bike on Metro North and the Long Island Rail Road. There are some restrictions to this, but overall, that's a pretty good deal.
So, this city might be tough for cyclists, but you can still do all right. Explore your options. You might also wish to call 311 and ask about getting a free NYC bike map.
Good luck!
